Must-Have Baby Accessories

Like baby clothes, there are a lot of options for accessorizing your little one. While some accessories add a fun flare to your baby's outfit—who doesn't love baby bows and bowties?—many others are must-haves to protect your baby's skin and eyes. See below for more details on accessories for your infant and toddler.

Made in the Shade

It's important for your baby to get some vitamin D, but because their sensitive skin burns more easily and their eyes don't block the sun as well as an adult's, particularly in their first six months of life, protecting them against the sun is a must. It's best to limit their exposure in direct sunlight between the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when the sun's rays are strongest. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping babies younger than six months out of direct sunlight all together. Instead, seek shade and use umbrellas or a stroller canopy. Additionally, be sure to protect your baby's skin and eyes with a wide-brim hat with an all-around three-inch brim to shield your child's face, ears, and back of the neck, and baby sunglasses with at least 99% UV protection. Choose from a wide variety of protective, stylish accessories for infants and toddlers, including designs from Babiators, Baby Banz, Ray Ban, Jr., Janie & Jack, Flap Happy, and i Play.

It's in the Bag

Between books, binders, computers, and snacks, kids have a lot to carry. When purchasing a backpack or bag for your child's belongings, be sure to look for wide, padded shoulder straps to help evenly distribute the weight of all they're carting around. Be sure that the bag fits snugly against your child's back as well, as this will help ensure that their back and neck aren't strained. It's recommended that the back panels and shoulder straps be padded with foam to best support your child's back and shoulders. The backpack is going to encounter a lot throughout its journeys—heavy books, rain and snow, and at least a spill or two. When shopping for a bag, look for water-resistant fabrics (nylon or polyester) and quality zippers that don't catch on fabric. Also, be sure not to overload the bag with too many heavy items.

Choose from animal designs from Skip Hop Zoo and Beatrix New York, colorful styles and patterns from STATE Bags, Le Sportsac, and Hershel Supply Co., and a range of sizes, including wristlets, iPad cases, pencil cases, and backpacks.

Chill Out

When cold weather hits, you'll want to make sure your little one is kept snug when leaving the house. In addition to a warm winter coat or bunting, be sure to keep your child's head and hands warm with a hat and mittens. It's best to travel with an extra of each item in case they get dirty or lost during your travels. Choose from brands like 2H Hands Knits, Appaman, Zutano, Magnificent Baby, and JoJo Maman Bebe.

For infants, you may also want to invest in scratch mittens, which protect your little one from scratching their face with their fingernails (they're much sharper than you'd think) and lightweight baby hats to help keep baby warm, particularly when they're not yet able to adjust their body temperature. Choose from brands like Skip Hop, Carter's, Babysoy, and more.

Baby's Day Out

Sometimes you've just got to get out of your sweats and get a bit dressed up. Accessorize your little one's fanciest attire with neckties, bowties, suspenders, belts, scarves, jewelry, and hair accessories. Choose from a variety of accessories from brands like Andy & Evan, Peppercorn Kids, and Wee One to match your baby's personal style.
