Comments about Penguin Air Purifier:

We have this and we love it. The filter/UW light keep the air in my kid's room feeling and smelling fresh and light and judging from the muck that washes out of the filter each time we clean it and the lack of dust in the room I'd say that it does a great job of cleaning the dander/ dust/pollen out of the air. (We keep a very clean home, lots of houseplants, and are non-smokers of course, but we do have 2 cats and tons of trees around the house, so there's always a LOT of pollen in the air in the spring.) My kids love it because it's a penguin - they've named it 'Pingu' and always want me to turn it on at night - it also serves as their nightlight. Truth be told- one of the reasons I originally bought it because it had a fan and we needed to drown out some very noisy upstairs neighbors so our kids could get some sleep. We've since moved into our own house and that no longer applies. But the gentle white noise coming from the fan still helps hide other household noises (hello: Santa) and they sleep better overall with it on. We've had ours for about 3 years and it still works great. Laugh at the ad if you want, but I'm still very happy with Mr. Pingu.

Comments about Penguin Air Purifier:

It worked well to start. It has varying fan levels, so on the low setting it is pretty quiet, but loud on the higher settings, as one would expect. When functioning properly it has two lights that are somewhat bright, one red, one blue. When it is powered on at all, the red light is on. Great. The blue light signifies that the UV light (a crucial part in why we wanted it) is functioning. If the blue light is off, the UV light is not active. Since we were putting it in a child's room, we felt these would act well as a nightlight. The air quality (to start) was good, even on the low setting.
However, over long term use, problems became obvious. After a while, the blue light would go off. We would tip the penguin a bit, then reset it and the light would return. Pretty soon that trick wouldn't work anymore. Eventually (well under a year of every day usage), the blue light would not turn on anymore. The filters are over $20 but could be found at a few stores, online and off. But the UV light can not. In fact, it turns out you have to order the item, via the order form in the Manual, using MONEY ORDER only (no checks, no credit cards? what is this -- the dark ages?), with a 3-4 week turnaround. So we've continued to use it in a different room with no UV light. We will not buy another product from this brand until they allow reasonable replacement part ordering.
