Graco: A Company Transformed to Meet the Needs of Parents

In 1942, Russell Gray and Robert Cone founded Graco Metal Products in Philadelphia. Originally a manufacturer of machine and car parts, the company shifted its focus in 1953 after one of its engineers, Rex Thomas, watched his wife push their baby in a swing. Thomas believed that automating the pushing motion was possible with Graco-produced parts—and would be a great help to parents. Graco embarked on creating the world’s first wind-up infant swing, originally called the Graco Swyngomatic, and a leading maker of baby gear was born. Today, Graco is known for its car seats, strollers, portable playards, and, of course, swings. It has won numerous awards and earned the trust of millions of parents by offering products that are safe, reliable, and durable.
