This product is terrible, and it does not generate any vapor. As I was unpacking the product, I noticed warnings all over the product itself and the owner's manual stating, "If the product doesn't generate vapor, keep adding pinches of salt to the water." Well, I did that, and the vaporizer would then start working for about 20-30 minutes...and then it would stop generating vapor again. I bought this product to run independently in my son's room at nighttime. Well, every morning I'd check the product to find that the water basin was still completely full. I don't have the time or patience to continue adding pinches of salt every 30 minutes in order for the product to work. Also, every time I'd open the water basin, I noticed tons of black flakes floating in the water...and a distinct odor. Even if the product did work, I would not want black flake-laden water vaporizing into the air I breathe...yuck!

This is a great product while it works. For the first dozen uses it makes our small room nursery as moist as the jungle. Plus, the warm mist makes the room, which is normally too cool, nice and warm. It does make a distinctive gurgling noise but it isn't loud enough to keep my son awake. The down side is that it stops working after about two months. In the winter we use it every day because it's so dry in the house. It also spits out strange black flakes into the left over water which I'm thinking maybe bits of an internal filter. I've tried to clean the motor unit to try to get the thing working again but it's all one piece and there's really nothing one can see that needs cleaning. I wish I could find a more reliable unit but I do keep buying this one because of it's low cost and I've had the same limited life out of more expensive units.

My pediatrician doesn't recommend any over the counter medication for cough suppressant for my two year old son. It was recommended that I use a humidifier. My son was so miserable and gagging with his cough. I bought this product and used the Vicks vaporizer with it. I turned it on during his nap time in the afternoon, by evening, his cough had improved tremendously.

I purchased this for the nursery. Using the vaporizer + the recommended menthol inhalant, it cleared my son's congestion up in just a couple of nights. I had a cold as well, and just being in the room helped me breathe better. The unit is so quiet, that I had to put my hand up to it to make sure it was working. Great buy - just what I was looking for.
