Not As Balanced as I expected

By Jennifer, First Pregnancy

from New York, NY

If you are looking for a case to be made around home births and natural delivery, this is likely for you. If, like me, you were looking for a more balanced overview of ALL the options this is probably not the right read. While very informed and detailed, I felt after the first few chapters that I would be failing as a woman if I didn't try to tackle a natural birth. In trying to empower women to make decisions about their birth, it instead made me feel like I had only one 'option'.

erases the unknown

By Rachel, 19 weeks

This book has some really great info in it. It thoroughly explains the birth process and what you can do to help make birth more comfortable without medication. However it is very strongly swayed towards having a natural birth and not allowing too much medical intervention (even ultrasound) unless absolutely necessary. Although it lessens the fear of the actual birth process, it promotes paranoia and suspicion of having any kind of birth with pain relief or medical intervention.

very practical

By Loriann, mom of 1, nearly 2

I read this book while pregnant with my first son (now 2). It eased my fears. It gave me practical exercises to do. The authors gave me a recipe for "Labour Aid" which I drank throughout my labour. I plan to go back and re-read key sections to prepare me for my second son's birth in April 2003.

A must read for every expecting mom

By Jennifer

This book was the best preparation I had for the birth of my son. In fact, I learned much more from this book than I did from my Lamaze class. I'm not sure how I would have made it through childbirth without the information this book provides. This book is very thorough, and it tells a woman everything she needs to know about childbirth. The authors' theory is that childbirth is only scary to the new mom because it is unfamiliar. They argue that the best way to limit pain during childbirth is by keeping mom calm, and the best way to have a calm mom is to have a well-prepared mom. This book will tell you everything you need to know. Every first-time pregnant mom should read this book before going into labor

I read this book in preparation for our second baby and I went into labor a lot more informed, relaxed and calm. The Birth Book gave me confidence during labor because of the wealth of information given in this book. The author is able to relate to all expectant parents no matter what your birth plan. Definitely check this book out!

This book is Awesome!!

By Beth

I probably like this birth book the best of all the ones out there. It provides so much good information. It not only covers all the basics like the stages of labor but has very good comfort tips. It isn't "pound you over the head" skewed towards unmedicated birth. It is reassuring though to moms who do want unmedicated births that it really can be done. It is a must read, imo! Before I read it I thought I knew a lot about birth and was already feeling comfortable with giving birth. After reading this, I was confident about giving birth!

I liked this book especially because it examines all the pros and cons of the birth scene, without being antagonistic or guilt slinging. Very informative, and I believe any birth is so much better the more informed you are. Highly recommended reading!

So helpful!

By Sandra, Gabers Mom

This was such a helpful book! I had just moved to the NLs at 7 months prego and didn't speak Dutch ......so was not able to take any Childbirth lessons. I knew that I would have to have a "natural" childbirth, due to their dislike of drugs during birth. Dr. Sears shared all her birth stories with pros and cons to all types of deliveries. I loved the part on "relaxing" and accepting the pain of childbirth...it got me thru the delivery fearless. What a great book. I highly recommend it for everyone...esp first time Moms!

A very balanced look at all options

By Erica, mother to be

I loved this book! It was so helpful for me since it gave both sides of every intervention and choice that new mom's have to make. Martha Sears accounts of her own births are uplifting and encouraging. She put me at ease! I am considering a natural home birth and this book gave me a lot of insight into all the choices that I would have to make.

MUST READ!!!!

By Bridget, new momma of 1

from Illinois

This is a MUST READ book especially for a first time mom. Delivering a baby can be a VERY scary thought because of the fear of the unknown. This book will help you ease ANY of those fears and will help you deal with what is going on before, during, and after the delivery. This book basically tells you what your body is doing during labor and how you can work WITH you body NOT AGAINST it. If you are even THINKING about doing the delivery without any medication this is the book for you.
