I love my diaper genie. Yes the smell does get you a bit when you dispose of one and have to change the bag but, it does not smell up the room as others have said. Maybe I just don't have as many dirty diapers. Much rather prefer this over using the trash can.

We have now gone through 2 of these. As others have mentioned, they break very easily. I sent the second one back and even asked if there was a recall on them since learning that many other people had the same complaint-- they said no...hmmmm.

I have three. One for upstairs, one for down, and one at grandma's house. You never have to touch the pail when disposing diapers, and changing the bag is much easier than the previous version. Anyone complaining about smell escaping when opening the lid should start dumping solids down the toilet. It's better for your nose and for garbage dumps that are not made for human excrement.

We've had this diaper pail for two years now, and it's still doing a fab job in keeping the odors in and the mess contained. I buy refills in bulk so we don't run out, as sometimes they seem to go out of stock everywhere at once. But for one kid, the refills last a long time -- I think we go through fewer than one a month now. Tip for stink prevention: when kids get older and the BMs get more solid, dump the solids in the toilet before throwing the diaper out. I think we empty it once a week, maybe twice, and are very pleased with the job it does. Important: BUY THE ELITE (this one) not the basic model - this one has a foot pedal for opening, which allows for one-handed disposal.

It holds diapers and doesn't stink, so I'm not sure what else to really expect from this product. However, I'm irked to no end that I can't find the refills on this website. One-stop shopping - helllooooo......
For that reason alone, I just can't recommend the product to a friend. The refills are kinda important. I'm just saying.

My son uses his diaper genie for diapers. I went home and bought one to use for my cat litter! I scoop out the litter and put it in the diaper genie - no more nasty cat litter smell in trash cans or in my house. I couldn't be happier.

Would be better off with something like the Saftey 1st Diaper Pail. I didn't trust the reviews, and bought it. Refills are expensive and don't hold as many diapers as they claim. If you think you can get way with using generic refills, you wont, they don't contain the smell.

I am a work from home mother of a 2 YO still in diapers & a newborn, so I change tons of dirty diapers every day. I am also a home childcare provider, so I have my 2 kids plus my daycare kids. My house could very easily stink like dirty diapers if I allowed it but because of my 2 Diaper Genies (yes! 1 for both changing tables located in different parts of my house), it smells like no dirty diapers are in this house at all.
The ones that are complaining about how they have to change it out every day, obviously aren't using theirs very wisely. I put diapers that are only wet in the trash can & the dirty diapers in the Genie. I have a sensitive nose & the wet diapers just don't need to be contained in the Genie b/c they don't make the room smell. This cuts down on how often you have to change out the Genie & also cuts down on refill costs.
This is definitely a no-regret purchase.

I was skeptical of this item since I've heard/read such negative things about it (my church had some in their nursery and vehemently got rid of them - later I discovered it was simply because no one wanted to empty them!). My husband INSISTED that we get one, though, so I went along with it and I'm glad I did!
Since I am a first-time-mom, I had NO idea how stinky diapers can get - especially if you leave them in an open trash can!! The Diaper Genie does a wonderful job of eliminating and containing the smell! Plus, you don't have to replace any deodorants/deodorizers. There is a small amount of smell that leaks out when you open it up to deposit a new diaper, but it hasn't been powerful or lingering.
I LOVE the foot pedal mechanic for opening the pail. It's so easy. Every now and then, I have found that if I close the pail wrong after replacing the bag the mechanism for opening the top will get kind of stuck, but it's easy to fix. It's really nice not having to stoop over to throw a diaper away, too. The height is wonderful, and not too tall for me to reach either if I am on the floor!
The included bag cutter is very helpful - I often misplace my scissors so having to track them down would be inconvenient. I like that I can cut the bags off at whatever size I want. If I had to use, say, a garbage bag, I would be reluctant to throw it in the dumpster unless it was completely full for fear of wasting a perfectly good bag. With the Diaper Genie bags, I can cut at any place and tie it up real quick for trash day - no problem!
I do find that the refills are somewhat expensive. However, I have found some solutions that work for me. First, the diapers can be compacted down a bit before the bag is cut and tied off. This can save some material. Second, I wait for them to go on sale and buy a good supply then! (they go on sale often at many retailers) My daughter is 6 months and we go through one refill every one to one-and-a-half months, which is acceptable to me.
And as far as cleaning goes - I've never had to! The bag covers all the areas the diapers would touch, so I am not concerned with sanitation.
We have one downstairs and I have contemplated getting a second one for the upstairs, too. I would recommend it for anyone!

We've had it for almost 2 years and I bought a second one for downstairs. I tried buying a cheeper diaper pail but the odor was unbearable. There is a slight odor escape noticeable if there's a large poop in the pail when you open it to throw out a diaper, but I think it works really well and hands free is a must when your holding a baby.

We had heard that this was a great product so we bought one. We've had it for about six months now and I have no idea why I've kept it so long. Every time you open it to add a new diaper the smell is so overwhelming that it lingers in the room for a LONG time. This after just a half day of use. Also, it doesn't hold very many diapers. We need to change the bag every day for our 12 month old (no idea how the person below get three days). Finally, changing the bag is a totally MANUAL proposition. You have to cut the existing section off (built in cutter), then tie a knot to create a new bag section, then pull it down. All of this releases smells into the room which cannot be described in words. Surely there is a better way.

As a diaper genie owner several years ago, I bought this thinking that it was essential (as my prior one was). While making the Genie easier to operate, (you just drop it in) the key reason for owning it was lost, the odor creeps out every time you open the Genie, just like a it would with a trash can. Stinky.

I used this pail for about 1 1/2 years before it broke. This pail has an inner set of clamps that close the bag to contain the smell. After about a year of use we had trouble with these clamps getting stuck and then one side eventually broke altogher. Before it broke this was a decent pail. You did get a little whiff of odor when it opened, but not bad. It did a good job of containing smells otherwise. You have to cut and tie the bag to change it which was easy to do but kind of annoying in my view. Otherall this is a good pail, I just wish it would have lasted longer.

I was very disappointed with the diaper genie, for several reasons. First, it was not as effective at containing odor as I had hoped. Second, the opening through which it recieved the diaper is too small, which required you to push the diaper down into the pail, which typicaly required pushing your entire hand into the pail to push the diaper deep enough so that it drop into the storage area. Third, cleaning it out smelled up whatever room you're in. You have to open the entire pail (it unfolds on a hinge in the middle), and cut the bag open (using their cutting mechanism), and then tie off the bag filled with dirty diapers. Once you cut the bag open, all of the odor from the diapers is released into the room (and, since you're hunched over to cut and tie off the bag, its pretty tricky to accomplish without having your face, and nose, right near the now open bag of dirty diapers). If you're in an area that you don't want to smell awful for however long it takes the odor to difuse, then you need to carry the pail to another room, and its size and shape make it a little awkward and unpleasant to carry, especially when its full of dirty diapers. Lastly, and most importantly, I owned two diaper genies (both gifts), and they both broke. Both pails broke in two ways. First, the lids consistently and repeatedly came off, and had to be reattached. Second, the pail has two internal flaps that open when the pail lid is opened and close to enclose the storage area when the lid closes. On each pail, one of the internal flaps broke and stopped opening when the pail lid opened. This meant that the opening through which the diaper needed to be pushed was half the size it was supposed to be, which made it harder to push through and also required putting even more for your hand, wrist, and arm into the pail.
