I walked by the puzzle, and it started making noise. My daughter was sleeping so I quickly grabbed it up and moved it to put the pieces back in their slots. They didn't make any noise as I put them in. Then the next day, my daughter was playing with it and the shapes would make sounds even if you put the wrong piece in. So I called the number on the back of the puzzle, and was informed that the slots are "light activated", therefore if you walk by and your shadow falls on it, it will make noise, and it is perfectly acceptable for the slots to make noise even if you put in the wrong puzzle piece, because it's just responding to light changes. According to the representative, this way the child learns because if they put the wrong piece in, and hear the noise, they'll realize the animal is making the wrong noise. That's not what I was expecting from this toy - I was expecting each puzzle slot to sound when the correct piece is placed in it. And I certainly wasn't expecting it to make noise when you're not using it. Besides that, I was disappointed with the sounds each animal makes, they all sound pretty much the same, like static in varying tones. Gave it two stars because the animals look great, and the pieces fit well in the slots, so my daughter still plays with it.

My 18 month old boy LOVES playing with this puzzle! The sounds drive me nuts, but it's worth it to hear him laughing!
