My grandson is so proud when he locates the appropriate letters and places them in the correct spaces. He just turned 4 and is recognizing and spelling many of the 3 and 4 letter words he learned from this toy. The pictures are bright and clearly represent the objects.

I bought this for my 2 year old even though the box recommends 4+ because she enjoys the Melissa & Doug shape puzzles so much. After she really mastered those, I started looking for something a little more challenging. I have never spent much time with her on letter recognition because I don't really thing it makes much of a difference if a child can read / spell at 2 or 5...we take advantage of this age for learning multiple languages instead...BUT, this puzzle looked like it was worth a shot since it's different from other things she already has. What a HIT! She points to the picture and says the word (so this helps 2 year olds who are just starting to talk, I think) then I hand her a letter and tell her what it is and the various sounds it makes. I don't expect her to see the dog card and find the letters out of the pile, so I give her the "d" and say "d like dddddog" and she puts it in the right spot.

There are LOTS of letters so this may be an issue for some families. We are big on cleanup so that's a lesson, too. Some moms may want to leave out only a couple of the boards and letters to limit the mess / possibility of loss.

Overall we love this toy and think it's a great addition that will grow with a child from age 2+.

I homeschool my children and have used this when I need a "special" activity to award my boys with. It works great with my spelling curriculum. I can also just use the letter and have them spell other words on their lists.
