It is plenty sensitive for any amount of force. It even makes sounds when turned on its side and rolled around.

My 10 month old twin girls enjoy this musical drum. They beat on it, roll it, and toss it around and it keeps on working. The lights attract their attention and the music is not too loud. It's also creative that the drum makes sounds when it is rolled.

I was hesitant at first to buy this for my son as it is a pricey drum. He loves it and it entertained him before he could actually push the buttons.Now he is drumming and creating his own sound. When you roll it, smack it or push a button it plays a song to a sound. The songs are easy on the ears as well and there are two volume settings. I highly suggest this for your child if he is attracted to music-it is VERY durable.
