Comments about happy bellies Brown Rice Cereal:

I bought this cereal for all the good things that the company says and the good reviews, ignoring the bad reviews, boy was I wrong.

I was very excited to give my baby his first cereal, just to open the can and notice it smelled terrible. It smelled fishy and oily, like expired oil. Looking inside it's also half empty. I researched online, I'm not the only one. Clearly there's something wrong with this product. I wouldn't eat this myself, there's no way I'm feeding this to my baby. I bought 3 cans 3 months ago, they expire on April 2014, almost 1 year and 8 months from today and they are all bad.

Comments about happy bellies Brown Rice Cereal:

I thought i was giving my son the best milk and cereals until i came across with this website. http://livingmaxwell.com/organic-food-dha-ara

Here is whats written in the article:

Earlier this year, I wrote a post about DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid), an unapproved additive in certain organic foods and organic milk.

Companies were adding DHA and ARA (Arachidonic acid) into their products because they are omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, respectively, and also provide a unique marketing angle. (A majority of the organic food companies are sourcing their DHA and ARA from Martek Bioscienes Corporation.)

This is all fine and good except for the fact that Martek's DHA and ARA are synthetic and something antithetic to everything that certified organic stands for.

At the recent USDA/National Organic Standards Board meeting in Savannah, Georgia, the issue of DHA and ARA was discussed and voted on. Needless to say, the decision was a big loss for organic consumers.

The National Organic Standards Board decided that DHA and ARA would be allowed in certified organic products but that no hexane could be used in the processing of these additives. Hexane is a neurotoxin, a by-product of gasoline in petroleum and is considered a hazardous air pollutant by the EPA.

            There are two problems here.

            1) Even though hexane is no longer permitted, the ruling did not specify that other "synthetic solvents", which have the potential to be more dangerous, could not be used in the processing of DHA or ARA.

            2) The Organic Consumers Association is reporting that Martek's DHA and ARA still do not meet the standards of certified organic. Why?

A detailed review of Martek's patents reveal that the company is:

*** Using genetic-modification in the manufacturing process for DHA –> something not allowed under USDA certified organic regulations.

*** Using genetically-modified corn in the manufacturing process for DHA –> something not allowed under USDA certified organic regulations.

It is an understatement to say that this situation is appalling.

            WHAT TO DO

Without a question, I am avoiding all certified organic products that use added DHA or ARA.

As I mentioned in my previous post about this subject, The Cornucopia Institute provided a list of some products that contain Martek's DHA or ARA. They are:

            For Children and Adults

Wegman's Organic Yogurt (Fruit on the Bottom Super Yogurt)
            Horizon Organic Milk
            Stremicks Heritage Foods Organic Milk
            ZenSoy Soy on the Go

Baby Food (select products contain Martek's DHA)

            Happy Bellies
            Tasty Baby Organic Infant Cereal

Infant Formula (all organic infant formula products contain Martek's DHA, with the exception of Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula)

            Bright Beginnings Organic
            Earth's Best Organic
            Parent's Choice Organic
            Similac Organic
            Vermont Organics

If you know anyone who has infants or babies, please forward this post to them. It is ESSENTIAL that they are not feeding their children anything that contains questionable ingredients.

Unfortunately in this case, the National Organic Standards Board has been influenced by big corporations and is not doing enough to protect organic consumers.

This is a good product, but I was VERY disappointed in the amount of cereal that's actually in the cannister. If you're into organics and don't mind the price, then be forewarned: you'll open up the cannister & see it's only 1/2 (if not even less) full.

Tried the oatmeal and it was delicious. Moved up to the multi-grain and its wonderful as well! Naturally I tried it myself first to be sure what my baby was tasting and I would eat it for sure. Mixes well with water or formula (i have tried both) and any fruit/veggie you like. Does not cause any tummy issues with my little one.

This rice cereal was the best we found in terms of nutrition. When we started solids with my son at 6 months, I only wanted to consider organic baby food. Happy Baby rice cereal is organic and I liked that it has pre and probiotics for better digestion and gut health. I haven't seen any other brand with those benefits. I mixed the cereal with breast milk at first, so my son would recognize a familiar taste. Overall, we definitely recommend this rice cereal!

This cereal makes a great first time feeding cereal using multi-grains and with added DHA and choline, which are two great reasons to try this cereal. Essential to brain development it is a great bonus to have in your baby's cereal. It mixes easily with formula or breast milk and as your baby grows it is good for mixing in fruit purees or chunks for finger feeding. I also like adding some cinnamon for added flavor.

I believe it's good for my infant; organic and with amaranthus which is healthy and rare ingredient of baby food. The only concern is WHY the can is almost half empty (I can understand it's 7 oz. product, but in this case the box should be half of its size). What a waste of packaging material...

Got this because of the probiotics and at first mixed it with formula, but now I mix it with prune juice so that my son can poo easier and it mixes great with that too! He took to it right away and didn't reject it like he has done other food. Also mixes well with pureed food.

I use all the cereals from this company and my daughter loves them. I started off with the cereals mixed with breastmilk and then I added fruits and vegetables to it. The ceareal mixes very well and I feel like i'm giving her a very healthy meal! : )

We began using this as baby's first food. But now that our daughter is 18 months, we frequently use it when she's having a rough night and is finicky about eating dinner. I just mix it with apple sauce or honey and she gobbles it up!
