This is the ONLY book my 9 month old baby would sit still for, because she could open and close the flaps. Some open upwards, others to the sides, and some pull down. She is 10 months now and we've read it every night sometimes several times a night. Despite some aggressive tugging it has not ripped, but some flaps are a little bent. She will sit and play with this book on her own, and actually now is more interested in other books. This one started the trend! Before she would never sit still on our laps. The story is of finding the perfect pet, from a zoo who keeps sending animals until they get it right. We're not concerned about the message at this age. It's mainly read for its interactive use and to be able to recognize pictures of animals. We always demonstrate the animal sounds as well. :) It's great for baby's dexterity and figuring out the different flaps.

This is a very cute book! It's perfect for little ones under the age of two. My son loves lifting the flaps to see what animal is inside. Anyone who suggests that this book is not appropriate because it gives the message that we just send living things back if we don't want them should be sent back themselves! I mean really, if you wrote to the zoo to request a pet and they sent you a lion, would you really keep it?

My 17m son loves lift-the-flap books so thought this sounded like a good choice. It is perfect for toddlers nice simple repetative story line, cute illustrations and flaps. This is the first book my soon wants in the morning and again when I get home from work (and again, and again...)

Some folks are concerned that the story line has a bad "message" - writing to the zoo to request a pet and the sending each animal back because it is "too ____" until the end when a gets one that is perfect. I choose not to take it so seriously - I think the author means it to be silly which is how I think kids will take it and not at all realistic. I thing most would agree that and elephant is not a good choice for a pet and that it is "too big" and not take this as judgement against big people.

But all of that said, I did not give it 5 stars because I used a label machine to replace two of the words. I replaced "scarey" with "slimey" for the snake as I didn't want to teach my son to be afraid of snakes and I replaced "naughty" with "silly" for the monkey just because it didn't sit well with me to be defining monkeys as naughty. So I guess we all have our own line.

I don't like this book's message. The narrator keeps getting different animals and for one reason or another (too tall, too scary, too jumpy etc.) keeps sending them back to the zoo. We don't just send living things back! Is this why we have so many unwanted dogs and cats in animal shelters? Oh, he was too jumpy, so I just sent him back! On a positive note, my 14mo. old likes the flaps even though they're kind of difficult for chubby little fingers. There are just too many other flap books with better messages... wish I could just SEND IT BACK!

This is a very fun 'lift the flap' board book with great animal pictures and a silly story to entertain both the adult and child reader. We've had it for several months and it still holds our very active toddler's interest, and it's sturdy enough that he hasn't managed to rip any of the flaps off yet. Good value!

This is a simple book for toddlers to have. I like that the illustrations are small and don't take up the whole page. Many toddler books are too busy for my taste. There are tabs that you lift as you read the story which are too hard for my one year old to manipulate, but that's okay, as we read this book together. I like that it's a riddle book and emphasizes some key concepts such as heavy, small and tall. I was pleasantly surprised that this is a sturdy board book, as the price seemed to reflect a flimsier made product.
I bought this based on the below review...and I'm really glad I did!

My 2 yo has liked this book from when she used it to focus on the bold color of the illustrations on white backgrounds. Then she couldn't lift the flaps herself but loved it when I did. Now she makes all the noises the animals makes when she sees them, lifts the flaps, names them, etc.
The repeating phrase in the book has also entered our family vocabulary, because my spouse and I also love the book so much.
