      • By the big red barn
        In the great green field,
        There was a pink pig
        Who was learning to squeal.

There were horses and sheep and goats and geese--and a jaunty old scarecrow leaning on his hoe. And they all lived together by the big red barn. In joyous and exuberant

Pictures, Felicia Bond lovingly evokes Margaret Wise Brown's simple, rhythmic text about the cycle of a day on a farm, where a family of animals peacefully plays and sleeps.

In the barnyard there are roosters and cows, horses and goats, and a pink piglet who is learning to squeal. Margaret Wise Brown's lulling story about a day in the life of a barnyard is now available as a sturdy board book. Felicia Bond's atmospheric illustrations add to the tranquil simplicity of this story.

Comments about Big Red Barn Board Book (Board Book):

I never tire of reading this book with my kids. We love the animal illustrations, animal sounds and sing-songy rhymes. I definitely consider it a must-have for any board book library and I almost always include this book in baby shower gifts.

Comments about Big Red Barn Board Book (Board Book):

I love most of Margaret Wise Brown's books, and read them as a child myself. I am an early childhood professional and this book has been a hit with all of the children I've used it with. The story is simple, not too many words (keeps the attention of toddlers), and the pictures are cute but also accurate. I read this to the boy I care for (he just turned two) everyday before his nap, somewhere in the middle of our books (between the ones that excite him and the ones that calm him for sleep). This book has plenty of opportunities for conversation and interaction, which I don't usually have to initiate because he will. The illustrations are colorful and clear, and complement the writing well. Highly recommended!

Comments about Big Red Barn Board Book (Board Book):

My daughter does not like this book. She usually closes the book when I try to read it to her. Some of the animals are drawn too small and the story is not fun. She usually loves anything with animals, but this book is not her favorite! Plus the board on the book is peeling even though it has not had much use.
