Perfect for our 47" wide hallway
By Aline, mom of 10 month oldSite Member from Atlanta, GA on 11/1/2006

I bought this for our extra-wide hallway at the top of the stairs. It is perfect for us. It is very sturdy and easy to open. And it can be left open when baby is asleep.

Not baby-proof
By Rebecca, mother of 19 month oldSite Member from Ft. Wright, KY on 11/1/2006

This is the only gate I found that would fit my 9' opening and it does its job better than anything else I could get. So I would recommend it... with just a few observations. The lip at the foot of the gate is a little awkward and easy to trip over, but not a huge issue for me because there's only one step where I have it installed. In addition, the whole system has always been a little flimsy because my opening is so wide, but it always did the job... until my baby turned 19 months... and figured out that flimsy-ness meant if he grabbed the bars and shook hard enough, the gate would pop open. It does, and he gets through. It would be good if they could make this more solid, even in really wide openings.

Cheaper than building a wall
By Mary Anne - mature momSite Member from Omaha, NE on 11/1/2006

We have an 11' wide opening between the kitchen and family room. This gate was perfect. Husband installed it quickly and my teenager can operate the lock so he's not climbing over. I would buy it for anyone who has an extra wide opening.

Worked for us where we couldn't mount to stair openings
By Lucinda, mother of 2 (toddler and baby)Site Member from Evanston IL on 11/1/2006

We wanted to gate off the stairs but there was a banister on one side which we couldn't mount to. This was a good solution for us, as we mounted it across an entry way in front of the stairs. I liked it because we could easily open and close it (there is a swinging door in it) and didn't need to jump over it like the pressure mounted gates. Also, since the bars are vertical, my son wasn't tempted to climb over it like he was with the all-over plastic ones. We were happy with it, though I don't remember whether installation was tricky. I would buy it again for a similar space. (Yes, kid does figure out eventually how to open it, but by then, kid should be safe about going up and down stairs.)

Best option for large openings
By CJ, mom of 1 year oldSite Member from Michigan on 11/1/2006

We have a 66" opening between our kitchen and living area and we bought this gate (along with the extension) to fit it. It's sturdy (when the gate is shut - it does move when its open) and VERY EASY to open with one hand. It is a tripping hazard only if you leave the gate open a lot; most of the time it is closed in our house so we have to stop to open it which then naturally makes us step up and over the ledge at the bottom. All the other gates we were looking for that would work with our opening and the size of our kitchen were tons more money, so this was great for the price.

I love it
By Marcy, Mother of soon to be 2.Site Member from Superior, Colorado on 11/1/2006

I have this gate in the wide opening to my family room. It was too short without the extension and too long with the extension so we made an arched gate! It was easy and it even looks better than expected. I never have problens with it! Very sturdy, My 14 mo old can't even get it to rattle!

Have to add to the negatives...
By Parents of an active 11-month old sonSite Member from Michigan on 11/1/2006

Since we own three KidCo Safeway gates I didn't hesitate to purchase the Elongate. My husband brought home a labrador puppy and to keep the dog and to give our eight-month-old a safe haven to play in we decided to gate off what used to be our dining area. The width was just over 8 feet and that didn't leave us many gate options. I ordered the Elongate and my husband installed it. In short, I hate it. It doesn't feel solid like the Safeway gates do, it ruined our wall, we trip over the bottom of it going through the door and latching it securely takes brute strength. The baby is now eleven months old and hangs on the gate, which causes it to sway, and I am so scared he'll rip it out of the wall and get injured that I am now taking down the gate, which cost a fortune. We did end up buying two extensions for the gate so perhaps it is more stable without the extensions, but we trusted the manufacturers when they said two extensions wouldn't compromise the security of the gate at all. It sickens me to think what we paid for a gate that we got three months of semi-use from. Try the Configure gate by KidCo, the angles make it a much more sturdy gate and the installation won_t destroy your base molding.

Great for Wide Spaces
By April, Single Mother of 2-year-old and Twins on the way.Site Member from Porterville, CA on 11/1/2006

I gave the KidCo Elongate five stars, because I had been searching for an extra wide baby gate for a 65 1/2 inch space opening for a while and I got on BabyCenter and found the Kidco Elongate and Extension (which was the second one wie enough) read customers responses and debated it for a week. I said what the heck I need to keep my very curious two-year-old son out of the kitchen at my apartment (plus I have twins on the way), because he was climbing up the kitchen drawers to get on top of the counters and walked acrossed the stove, it came in about a week and I had my father (who is 53 years-old) put it together, and honestly with age he has gotten worse with putting things together, but he had no problems putting it together. After my father put the gate together I put it to the test and my son can not climb up on it or unlock it(if yours shakes I would find someone else to reinstall it because mine does not shake and it even has an extention) I feel that this gate is very durable and strudy and well worth the $100. I promise if you purchase this product you will be very satisfied.

Don't use for 60" opening
By Andrea, mother of a 1 yr. oldSite Member from Levittown, PA on 11/1/2006

The description says that this gate will fit up to a 60" opening, which is the size I needed it for. Unfortunately, when opened to 60", there is a large space between two of the bars. This space is twice the size of the space between the rest of the bars and my one-year-old can crawl right through. I would recommend it for a smaller space as it is sturdy and easy for an adult to open.

Not all that terrific
By Heather, mother of 1Site Member from California on 11/1/2006

I also purchased the gate with 1 extension piece. The directions are poor - and this isn't rocket science to install, but at least someone with a brain should be able to write a decent set of instructions to enclose with this - especially since this gate set-up isn't cheap. I do have a reservation with the extension in that there should be more support linked to the floor as the gate will move a little. i would not buy this again - it would have been easier to build a wooden one with a gate.

Great Gate
By Stephanie, mother of an 11 month oldSite Member from Kansas City on 11/1/2006

This is a wonderful gate. We used it in a 48" and 44" opening and it is extremely sturdy. There is the metal piece that you must step over, but this piece is what makes this a sturdy gate and no one in our household has tripped over it once. Other gates I've tried without this frame work are not sturdy. I did not have to use the extra extension peices so I do not know how well those work, but have had no problems with this gate. I feel very safe with my child behind these gates. Highly recommended.

Was disappointed
By Susan, mother of 3Site Member from Moscow, ID on 11/1/2006

I was very disappointed in this gate. I did alot of research, and felt I had found the perfect gate. Unfortunately, I had nothing but problems. As the other comments stated, the instructions are poor, and it is frequently tripped over. We had difficulty fitting it in our large opening (even though we purchased the extra extention and were assured that it would work for our space). The space between the wall was too large and therefore, unsafe. My daughter could fit her head through!! We ended up adding a piece to the wall for safety's sake. To top it all off, my daughter had it figured out by age 18 months, so it is now worthless. I can't believe I spent so much on this gate!

Great Gate...But...
By Wade, father of 1.Site Member from Dallas, Texas on 11/1/2006

We had to add an extension, and the pieces didn't match up very well - that was a battle! The instructions are poor, and one of our gates didn't have the template to help hang the brackets in it. With that being said, we've been very happy with the gates. They cover 7 foot spaces and are very sturdy. Even after having the difficulty hanging them, I'd buy them again.

Warning
By Annmarie, mother of 2 and licensed daycare providerSite Member from Napa, Ca on 11/1/2006

I loved the durability of this product and it kept my busy baby out of trouble. But it was extremely dangerous for eveyone else when the gate was left open. At the bottom of the gate where the door opens there is a metal lip that is connected to the wall. You need to be aware of it and step over it. If you were not familar with the gate you will trip over it. Many children and adults tripped over it. My grandmother tripped over it and broke her arm. Several children fell down as well. This product would work well on a stairway where the lip would not be an issue. But in an open area I would advise against it. It can be very dangerous.

Great for wide spaces
By Suzy, mother of 3Site Member from Sacramento, CA on 11/1/2006

This gate is easy to install and very secure. We have it in front of our stairway, the banister is metal and I cannot intstall a gate on the bottom step. The toddler can't open it, but the 4 year old can to get upstairs. Since it's wall mounted, you don't need to worry about it not being put in correctly every time it's used. I have several gates, and this is my favorite.
