Doesn't work on newer cabinets

Comments about Safety 1st Tot-Lok Starter Set - 2 locks and a key:

We had these on our cabinets when our first child was born and they worked well. However, before our second child was born we had our kitchen remodeled and went to reinstall the locks and the new cabinets were too thick for the magnet to work. The magnets need to be stronger.

I work at a day care and we have these locks in the infant room. It works great there, but in that class there are no kids pulling on the cabinets. I put them in a older classroom and the kids can still pull the doors open. It's hard but if they keep at it the lock will give and also break.
For long term use I would suggest getting something else.

This may be a slightly harder to install then some other locks but overall it is still fairly easy. The only thing I would recommend is buying an extra key as a backup. I locked the key in the cabinet once and I have to say the locks work really well because I couldn't figure out a way to get the thing open without buying another key.

I love these you dont see them. And they are very easy to install and use. The only problem is that untill you get used to where the maginet is on the other side of the door it takes a few minutes to open the door. And I am afraid to loose the one key the kit comes with. But we are ordering a spare.

These are the best locks on the market. We've tried others, but nothing compares! The doors are sealed by magnet and cannot be opened without the key. They may take a while to install, but well worth the time. Nothing comes before the safety of my child.

These locks have proven unbeatable over the past year (our son is now two). The only problem is we keep losing the key. I wish the key had something on it so we could hang it from the wall and not lose it.

If you all would have tested the locks before you drilled holes in your cabinets this wouldnt be an issue. Use a little common sense here lol.I work at a daycare and they are awesome! Just keep a bunch of extra keys on hand!! Cant wait to buy some for my new house!

I didn't install them,my husband did, and I didn't hear him cursing or cranking around,so I don't THINK they were THAT hard to put in. I could be wrong, but no matter, because we LOVE LOVE LOVE these locks! We have never had a problem using the "key"... we have thick cabnets too...still no problem. I tell everyone about these. We even used these at a well known day care center I worked at.... My point is, 'they work'.

These lock will work on any! Drill the hole so it's no less than 3/16 of an inch from breaking through. And, if it still doesn't work, it's probably due to the plunger being too short. Simply replace it with a longer piece of metal (2,3 or 4 pieces from a metal coat hanger comes to mind) to provide continuous contact from the lock to the end of the hole or purchase a stronger magnet from your local hardware store (a stronger magnet would make it much easier to find the right spot anyway).

I can now feel a lot better about having to walk into another room and knowing that my son cannot get into aything that he's not supposed to!!! A daycare provider told me that this is the only thing she has in her house. I can see why! I had to find some right away. I love them!

I am not sure why people say that these are hard to install. Maybe the older ones did not come with the clever sticky templates. After the first one was installed I completely secured the kitchen in half an hour. These are the only locks that my son cannot figure out or break. Worth the extra time and money.

Comments about Safety 1st Tot-Lok Starter Set - 2 locks and a key:

These work great (even through thicknesses approaching 1.5 inches). After installing 16 of them, I have some pointers though: 1. If you can, start somewhere where you can reach in to manually unlatch it if you mess up (bottom drawer or half of a left/right cabinet pair). 2. To get it to work, you have to drill almost totally through ... very tricky even with the depth gauge (I kept my finger on the other side and stopped when it got warm or I felt the wood move.) 3. ALWAYS ensure key works BEFORE closing it. These are not just child proof, they are adult proof. If the key doesn't work, nobody is getting in. Buy an extra key or two. 4. The enclosed directions worked great for our cabinets, but had to be adapted to work on most of our drawers (probably a common issue). 5. Best results placing the locks somewhere near the handles, but far enough away that the handle doesn't prevent getting the key to the proper spot. 6. Remember the drawers are not always centered and if any of the wood is warped, that may affect the install too. 7. For thick areas, it is wise to put something on the extension plunger so it cannot move in. Otherwise, if you slam the drawer, the plunger slides in and the magnet isn't strong enough to pull it out and thus will not unlock (the only defect I've noticed so far). Possibly the reason some people couldn't get it to work is that they did not extend the plunger (or they needed to drill more). 8. If you manage to install the lock with a little bit of a bind, it may not work (because the plunger can't extend). 9. Highly, highly recommend predrilling ALL holes to avoid cracking wood or messing up the screw heads. 10. The locking mechanism will not release if there is any pressure on it so the lock cannot fit too snugly. 11. Put some thought into it. My cabinets had thin areas where I could not easily install this product, but I was able to choose an acceptable spot.

These locks are the greatest! However, when you buy your lock set, buy extra keys for bathrooms, etc. plus one for emergencies. I had 3 keys for the kitchen and 2 bathrooms and the kitchen one is now gone forever. I'm searching online now to purchase another key. Just get an extra one when you order!!
